Today’s mobile robot perception is insufficient for acting goal-directedly in unconstrained, dynamic everyday environments like a home, a factory, or a city. Subject to restrictions in bandwidth, computer power, and computation time, a robot has to react to a wealth of dynamically changing stimuli in such environments, requiring rapid, selective attention to decisive, action-relevant information of high current utility. Robust and general engineering methods for effectively and efficiently coupling perception, action and reasoning are unavailable. Interesting performance, if any, is currently only achieved by sophisticated robot programming exploiting domain features and specialties, which leaves ordinary users no chance of changing how the robot acts. The purpose of this volume - outcome of a GI-Dagstuhl Seminar held in Dagstuhl Castle in June 2006 - is to give a first overview on the concept of affordances for the design and implementation of autonomous mobile robots acting goal-directedly in a dynamic environment. The aim is to develop affordance-based control as a method for robotics. The potential of this new methodology will be shown by going beyond navigation-like tasks towards goaldirected autonomous manipulation in the project demonstrators.

This book presents OntoCAPE, a formal domain ontology for chemical process engineering, which is based on a general upper ontology for engineering. The organization and structure of the ontology are depicted, and the conceptualizations of various topic areas are described in detail, including the areas of mereology, topology, systems theory, network systems, plant engineering, and others. Additionally, the rationale for choosing one particular conceptualization over the other is explicated, thus providing the reader with the necessary background knowledge for extending and customizing the ontology to his/her own purposes. Finally, the usage of the ontology is explained, and some sample applications are presented.
The Hybrid Deliberative Layer (HDL) solves the problem that an intelligent agent faces in dealing with a large amount of information which may or may not be useful in generating a plan to achieve a goal. The information, that an agent may need, is acquired and stored in the DL model. Thus, the HDL is used as the main knowledge base system for the agent. In this work, a novel approach which amalgamates Description Logic (DL) reasoning with Hierarchical Task Network (HTN) planning is introduced. An analysis of the performance of the approach has been conducted and the results show that this approach yields significantly smaller planning problem descriptions than those generated by current representations in HTN planning.
